Five Uses for Old Wine Racks

Perhaps someone gave you a new one and you do not just want to toss your old one in the trash. Maybe you have decided to abstain from alcohol. It could be that you found one in your attic and you simply do not know what to use it for. No matter the reason, you have at least one spare sitting around your house and you need some creative ideas regarding what to do with unused wine racks. Fortunately, these handy and often highly decorative storage devices can be put to good use in a number of manners.

Whether you have an accumulation of store-bought spice bottles or a collection of ornamental ones, a wine rack might be the ideal place to stockpile them. Simply place the bottles on their sides in the individual slots. Avoid sliding them too far into the rack, though, or you might not be able to reach them later. If you want to really get organized, stock the spices in alphabetical order.

Another creative way to use wine racks is to store your favorite reading materials in them. The types of publications a rack will hold depends on its design. Many have individual slots intended for single bottles of wine. These racks are just right for magazines and newspapers. Simply roll them up and tuck them into the openings. Other racks have more of an open shelf motif. These will hold books quite nicely. Consider keeping one in the kitchen to display your favorite cookbooks.

A wine rack that you can mount on the wall is a great place to store towels. Roll up hand towels, washcloths and other smaller linens and stash them in a rack hung on the wall in your guest bathroom. Visitors will likely gush over your unique and trendy decorating style.

Looking for a distinctive way to keep your favorite kitchen utensils accessible? Slide a ladle, rolling pin, tongs or other implement into each opening in the rack. You can slip in rolled up tea towels, potholders and other items you might need on hand while cooking, as well.

Finally, you can use wine racks as organizational mail holders. If several members of your household receive mail regularly, label one slot for each person. When you get the mail each day, distribute it by tucking each recipient’s letters, bills and junk mail into the corresponding niche. Alternatively, you could use a wine rack to sort your own mail. For instance, put unpaid bills in one hole, items to send out in another and so on.

Once you start to think creatively, you are sure to find a number of custom uses for old wine racks. In fact, you may start looking for new ones just so you can repurpose them.
