Wikipedia 24-Hour Blackout

Imagine a World Without Free Knowledge“. On January 18, 2012 from 05:00 UTC [Wed] to 05:00 UTC [Thu], the English Wikipedia community decided to make a global black out. This is for the people to fully understand the scope of the legislation projected by the U.S. Congress and to persuade its readers to speak their minds against it.

The reason behind this protest is their are against:

  • Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) a.k.a. House Bill 3261
  • Preventing Real Online Threats to Economic Creativity and Theft of Intellectual Property Act of 2011 (PIPA) a.k.a. Senate Bill 968

These 2 bills, if passed, will harm the world wide web and slow down online access.  A lot of companies already reacted on the issue. One of which is RxRights, a consumer advocacy group. They already said that SOPA “fails to distinguish between counterfeit and genuine pharmacies”. Imagine yourself buying a medicine from a forged website??

On November 2011, many Internet companies joined the American Censorship Day. Mozilla, Tumblr, Techdirt were among them.

January 18, 2012, marked the wider protests that has been considered by major internet sites such as Wikipedia, Google, Facebook, Yahoo, Twitter, Paypal, Wordpress, et.al.

And today, you will see how important they are as you go to your tasks and search for any information regarding topics like online masters degree, major league gaming, and so on.
